The ancient Babylonians are credited with the invention of astrology.  In the times before street lights, 24-hour businesses, and electricity in general, the dark night skies shone with a clear pantheon of planets, and star clusters, a time when even the dust of galaxies could be seen by the naked eye.

Although the idea that what is in the heavens influences us on earth is an ancient one, astrology today still bears out this simple astrological truth:  "As Above, So Below."

What does this axiom mean?  Simply, that what occurs among the planets above us is reflected in what occurs in our lives on this planet Earth.

There is also an astrological caveat that is twin to this axiom:  "The Stars impel; they do not compel."

This caveat states flatly that, although there is most certainly a relationship between what is happening in the firmament and what happens in our own lives, we are blessed with the gift of free will, and are not bound to blindly follow the dictates of fate.

Thus, astrology offers us a GUIDE to our lives, not an absolute.

Why does it work, then?

Quite simply, most of us tend to follow the path of least resistance; it's a basic law of physics.  Because of this, most of us tend to move into the directions that are implied within our birth charts.  There are always, of course, a few dedicated, demented, or enlightened souls who follow their own paths.  But they are quite rare, in my experience.  As an astrologer, I have found only one single solitary soul who did not fit her chart whatsoever.  There are also those who would say that some of us have evolved beyond our charts, and this is certainly possible.

The other 99.9% of us, though, do fit our charts.  And astrology works amazingly well in terms of the insight we can gain from it about ourselves, and about those closest to us.
